Natalie Barnard Breaks State Meet Course Record; Luke Sievers Leads Rock Bridge With Class 5A Win By Keenan Gray of DyeStat COLUMBIA, Mo – Lafayette-Wildwood’s Natalie Barnard continued her statewide dominance for another weekend in Missouri, winning the girls Class 5 state cross country title Saturday in Columbia at the Gans Creek Cross Country Course. Barnard, a recent commit to the University of Missouri, covered the 5-kilometer course in a state meet record time of 17 minutes, 12.7 seconds, defeating Father Tolton Regional Catholic junior Elyse Wilmes by 25 seconds to claim her first state individual title following a second-place effort in 2022. Taylor Werner, former Arkansas standout turned professional for Puma, held the previous course record of 17:14.22 from the 2015 state meet. Wilmes guided Father Tolton Regional Catholic to the program’s third consecutive state title and first as a Class 5 school, defeating Blue Springs South 103-117. Rock Bridge’s Luke Sievers outkicked Kirkwood’s Levi Rowan over the final meters to claim the boys Class 5 individual title by a margin of 14:51.9 to 14:52.1, as well as leading the Bruins to its first state team title since 2020 and third overall, defeating Rockhurst 91-99. Issac Rivera of Lincoln College Prep put together his first sub-15 effort of his career, winning the Class 4 boys individual title in a personal best 14:54.6. Carson Driemeier of Festus earned third in 15:14.1 to help the Tigers earn an 11th state team title and first since 2021. The St. Joseph’s Academy girls collected the program’s first state championship, winning the Class 4 race over West Plains 110-133, with Savannah Amann leading the way in sixth in 18:47.6.6 Harrisonville’s Kayleigh Norris ran 18:07.7 to win her first Class 4 individual title, following a ninth-place finish in 2022. In Class 3, Southern Boone’s Alexandra Volkart held off Lauren Eftink of Notre Dame to win the girls title in 18:27, with Ben Chance from Bowling Green running 15:25.2 to defeat East Newton’s Chase Sorrell in the boys race. St. Michael the Archangel narrowly escaped El Dorado Springs for the Class 3 boys title, winning 112-114, while St. Charles West girls scored 55 points in dominating fashion to win back-to-back Class 3 state titles. Reed Layton guided Woodland to the program’s first Class 2 boys team title, winning the individual title in 16:25.2 to lead the 96-point charge for the Cardinals. Lafayette County scored 111 points, defeating Woodland for the girls Class 2 title, with Kensington Curd of Brentwood winning the individual title in 19:24.3. Hermitage boys and Chadwick girls won their respective Class 1 team titles, with Hermitage beating Van Buren 74-97 and Chadwick defeating Liberal 60-98. Riley Blay from West Nodaway claimed the boys Class 1 individual crown in 15:48.2 and Mya Wray of South Nodaway won the girls title in 19:11.9.
